Issuing a pet passport and preparation for travel
Our clinic treats a large number of patients arriving from abroad or traveling internationally, therefore we have extensive experience in handling the administrative requirements of pet travel, as well as performing the necessary examinations for travel.
If you plan to travel abroad with your pet, you will definitely need a valid pet passport. Dogs, cats, and ferrets can travel with a pet passport, which is issued by a veterinarian. The passport is only valid if it contains a valid rabies vaccination.
A pet passport can be requested by the owner at any time, but a prerequisite is that the animal is individually identified with a microchip.
The pet passport is uniquely numbered and includes the place of residence, detailed information about the animal (name, species, breed, coat color and pattern, distinguishing features), as well as the microchip number, date of implantation, and location of the chip.
Rabies vaccinations are recorded in this official document year by year. Other vaccinations, as well as treatments against internal and external parasites, should also be documented in the designated sections.
Before traveling, it is advisable to familiarize yourself well in advance with the animal health regulations of the destination country, including required vaccinations, deworming, and tick prevention treatments. These can also be officially certified in the appropriate sections of the passport. In some countries, it is sufficient for the veterinarian to complete the section certifying the animal’s health status.
Before traveling, consult your veterinarian about infectious diseases that may be present in the destination country but are still rare in your region.
For further information, please visit www.petpassport.hu (the section on country-specific requirements is the most frequently consulted: http://www.petpassport.hu/orszagonkenti_sajatossagok.html).
If your pet (dog, cat, ferret, rodents, etc.) is traveling to Great Britain (United Kingdom), all necessary information can be found on the official website of the animal health authority: http://www.defra.gov.uk/. By clicking on the “Wildlife and Pets” section, all regulations and requirements can be read in English.
If you are traveling to a non-EU country, make sure to contact the embassy in advance and check with the airline or railway company regarding travel requirements.
Travel conditions for animals under 3 months of age with a passport (and microchip) can be found here.
